College English I

Students can earn both high school and college credit at the same time by paying the college tuition (approximately $213) to Highland Community College. The purpose of this course is to provide instruction and practice in the principles of written composition and critical thinking. Emphasis is on improving the student's ability to organize and express thoughts in clear, effective writing. To that end, students read and write in preparation for college classes, practice meaningful participation in class discussions, study the history and development of the English language, read books individually and complete book reports. Significant works in the British canon are examined and provide the basis for composition. Highland Community College requires five (5) formal essays within the semester. Additionally, the class may write shorter, less formal, papers utilizing media center resources for problem solving activities, and occasionally take quizzes and tests to check progress.
